In one of our previous articles we discussed the selection process for guard dogs for the purpose of K9 security, in this articles we are enlisting some interesting facts about five dog breeds that make excellent guard dogs. We will evaluate these breeds on their innate characteristics including prey drive and defense drive as well as trainability as guard dogs.
Akita
This intelligent and intense dog breed is my personal favorite to have around the house. Not only are they extremely cute, they also tend to be extremely loyal to their owner. Akita’s prey drive is neither too high nor too low which is exactly the requirement for a guard dog. Akita can be standoffish to strangers but they can be trained to recognize threats due to their high intelligence level. The Akita adapt easily to their environment. They possess high energy level and need a lot of intense exercise.
German Shepherd
These dogs were originally thought of as herding dogs and were bred to run the border and keep the flock intact as well as watch for threats. They tend to be very intense and loyal and can easily attack any threat to their home. German shepherds possess extreme versatility and can be used for a number of tasks other than as guard dogs. Due to their high intelligence level they are easily trainable. German shepherds have moderate to high prey drive and are extremely affectionate and kids friendly.
Giant Schnauzer
These dogs are not only intimidating due to their size, but they also possess a fierce bark and have an over protective nature. These dogs do not adapt well to apartment living however they can tolerate extreme weather conditions very well. They are very affectionate with family and incredibly kids friendly dogs. Giant schnauzer is easy to train due to high intelligence levels however they have a prey drive and defense drive on the higher side. With the right way of training and a lot of exercise, they can make great guard dogs.
Chinese Shar-pei
Originally bred for hunting and guarding purposes. These are temperamental and protective dogs. Chinese Shar-Pei do not take to strangers well and have a moderate prey drive. These dogs can adapt well to their environment and can stay alone very well. They are easy to train however they lack very high energy which is perfect if the set up where they are kept is indoor.
Belgian Malinois
These dogs were originally bred as herding dogs therefore they have a protective nature and are used in protection work as guard dogs nowadays. The Belgian Malinois have high tolerance to extreme weathers and are easy to train and highly intelligent. They have a moderate to high prey drive as well as defense drive. The dogs are very affectionate with family and extremely kid’s friendly, they also make really good and fun companions all the while protecting their home.
